Regular Stuff
Here’s a timetable of the weekly stuff that goes on!
–
| Monday | Launch, 7:45-8:45am
We meet early in the morning for prayer in the University’s Chaplaincy to start the week off by giving it to God. Globe International Cafe, 7.30pm A chance for International students to share a meal with people from all over the world, practice their English and have fun! There is also the opportunity to find out about what Christians believe. It is held in Jesmond Parish Church opposite Jesmond Metro. More information here. |
| Tuesday | Lunchbars, 1:00-2:00pm
We put on fortnightly short talks (subjects like “Is God out to spoil my time at uni?” and “If I’m a good person will I get into Heaven?”) with a free lunch in the Basement of the Student Union. There is an opportunity to ask tough questions and get them answered. Click here for the kind of questions we tackle… |
| Wednesday | Hallgroups, 7:30pm onwards
Weekly evening meetings (starting at 7:30pm) of first year students in Halls lead by a couple of second year students. Great fun – a short Bible study, chats and banter. If you know which Halls you’re coming to, get in touch with your Hallgroup Leaders here! |
| Thursday | Some Hallgroups might meet on Thursday night instead, depending on when their members are free. |
| Friday | CU Meeting, 7:00-9:00pm
We all meet together in one of the Uni’s lecture theatres and a guest speaker (usually from a local church) comes and gives us a short talk either on a theme or a section from a book of the Bible that we’ve been working our way through. We plan upcoming events and catch up together before heading to the Northern Stage (a theatre opposite our Student Union) for a drink. |
Houseparty
This is a weekend early in the academic year where the whole CU goes away together to learn more about God and to make yet more friends! We have a choice of seminars during the days on various topics, and the weekend culminates in a big evening performance of all sorts of bizarre and wonderful contributions from various CU members…
1 in 4 Events
Every month we put on an event that we can invite our friends and coursemates to (past events have included photography competitions, jazz nights, open mic nights, ceilidhs), and they usually include a short talk on the theme of the night (for example, “hope”). They’re great fun and we get a lot of people coming along. We always welcome new ideas for future events!
GO Events
Once a month each Hallgroup will put on an event in their Halls that anyone can go to. The idea is to reach out to the people you’re living with and to give them all a chance to chat with you about what you believe and to give them an opportunity to be linked up with the Hallgroup (because it’s their Hallgroup too!). Events have varied from Wii parties to film nights, sports matches to dial-a-toastie. The more imaginative the better!
Events Week
This is a week packed full of afternoon and evening events that takes place in February, and it’s the biggest thing we do in the year. We hire a marquee and set it up in the middle of the campus, where it becomes the venue for the Lunchbars every afternoon – then in the evening we have events like curry nights and sports quizzes with talks on the theme of the week (last year it was “WHO?”). It’s such an exciting week and everyone gets stuck in!
Firestarters
Firestarters is a really exciting part of CU. We go out in groups on campus with questionnaires asking questions like: “who do you think Jesus was?” and “what do you think of religion?” The thought of asking these questions is initially quite nerve-wracking for some CU members, but the people that have done it all say how rewarding it is and are amazed at the sheer number of different responses (some more unexpected than others!). Firestarters is just one way that we try and get Newcastle’s students thinking about exactly what it is that they believe and give them chance to chat about things that perhaps they wouldn’t be able to with their mates. Great stuff!
